What are Varifocals??

Varifocal lenses, also known as progressive lenses, are spectacle lenses that have multiple prescriptions in a single lens. They allow the wearer to see clearly at different distances without the need to switch between multiple pairs of glasses.

Varifocals are designed to correct both nearsightedness and farsightedness, and they have a graduated transition between the two prescriptions. This means that the top part of the lens is for distance vision, the middle part is for intermediate vision (such as computer use), and the bottom part is for reading.

One of the main benefits of varifocal lenses is that they provide a more natural and seamless visual experience. With traditional bifocal lenses, there is a visible line dividing the two prescriptions, which can be noticeable and distracting. Varifocal lenses, on the other hand, have a smooth transition between the prescriptions, making them more aesthetically pleasing and easier to use.

Varifocals can be made from various lens materials, including lightweight plastic, high-index plastic (thinner lenses), Polycarbonate, Trivex and some are still made in glass. They can also be made with coatings to reduce glare, protect against UV rays, and make the lenses more scratch-resistant.

Varifocal lenses are suitable for people with presbyopia, a common age-related condition that causes the eyes to lose the ability to focus on close objects. They are also suitable for people who need a multifocal prescription for both distance and reading vision.

With Varifocals, there is an area, towards the peripheral of the lens that is a little out of focus, this is caused by changing the curvature of the lens, how much is down to the strength of the prescription and the quality of the lens. Generally, the better the quality, the less distortion there will be in the lens.
